Indian Government Websites Under Attack by Indonesian Hackers

The Indian government recently issued a cybersecurity alert after an Indonesian hacker group targeted around 12,000 government websites in India. The group is reportedly carrying out denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks are a form of cyberattack where a network is flooded with data from multiple computers at once, causing it to become paralyzed.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) issued an urgent warning on April 13, 2023, after receiving reports that state and federal government websites could be targeted. The hacktivist organization has also reportedly released a list of government websites that it claims to be targeting.
Last year, Indian government websites were targeted by a Malaysian hacktivist group, which resulted in a disruption of the digital infrastructure. The Indonesian hacker group's recent invasions on Indian government sites are incredibly worrying and must be addressed rapidly.
To combat potential cyber threats and safeguard sensitive data and information, proactive measures must be taken. The Indian government has released the third version of Guidelines for India Government Websites (GIGW 3.0) https://guidelines.india.gov.in/introduction/, which provides guidelines to officials on how to develop, maintain, and manage government websites, portals, and mobile applications safely and securely.
These guidelines advise developers to encrypt passwords, keep software and plugins up-to-date, and protect connection strings, tokens, and keys. The report further advises developers not to provide too much high-level staff access to the website's backend, and that cookies should be secure.
As cybercrime continues to grow, vigilance is key, and it is essential to take necessary measures to prevent such attacks from happening in the future.
